Swedish Wool - Circular Design for Interiors
Did you know that more than half of all Swedish wool is burned or discarded every year? A natural fibre with remarkable qualities. At the same time, the demand for sustainable, bio-based materials in interiors and architecture is growing fast. Here, challenge meets opportunity.
In our prototyping lab in Varberg, we collaborated with master’s student Panisa Jermhansa to explore how Swedish wool can be transformed into modern sound-absorbing room dividers. The result: a modular system that unites circular design, function, and aesthetics.
Why Swedish wool?
Swedish wool offers:
Natural sound absorption, creating calmer workplaces, homes, and public spaces
Air purification, capturing odours and binding harmful VOCs
Bio-based and traceable origin, with strong links to animal welfare and sustainable farming
Instead of being seen as waste, wool becomes a sustainable interior solution for cafés, offices, restaurants, and residential spaces.
Design that creates value
The prototype utilises nonwoven wool panels, which are shaped through heat and pressure. Combined with smart wooden joints, it becomes a flexible system that can be expanded, flat-packed for transport, and recycled after use.
This is more than a design object; it is a circular model that brings together sheep farmers, the wool industry, and material innovators. From discarded fibre to low-impact acoustic panels, Swedish wool proves its untapped potential.
“Swedish wool is an overlooked treasure. By bringing it into our prototyping lab and combining design thinking with material innovation, we can show its true potential – not just as a fibre, but as part of a circular system. This project proves how creativity and collaboration can turn waste into value.”
The future of interiors is circular
Swedish wool has the capacity to become a natural part of tomorrow’s sustainable design and architecture. By reimagining a forgotten fibre, we show how innovation can begin with what we already have, turning undervalued resources into high-value solutions.
