From side stream to finished product – material and design developed together
Can industrial side streams become the starting point for a product with both strong design and real function?
In a new collaboration between Pur Interiör, The Loop Factory, Derome and Belid, sawdust from Derome’s own operations and textile offcuts from Svensson in Kinna have been given a new role in a series of lamps created for Derome’s innovation project Pilen in Varberg.
For The Loop Factory, the challenge was to take the idea from a side stream to a material and product that could work in practice.
Ludvig from The Loop Factory worked closely with designer Martina Liljeroth from Pur Interiör, contributing to both material development and product design. By developing the material and design side by side, the material could influence the product's shape and expression, while design requirements helped guide material development.
The result is a family of lamps in which material, form, and function were developed as one connected process.
The project was carried out within SpeedUpArena Halland and shows the value of bringing different areas of expertise together early in the development process. Pur Interiör and The Loop Factory developed the material and design together, while Belid contributed expertise in lighting, construction and manufacturing.
The lamps are now installed in Derome’s completed innovation house Pilen in Varberg.
