Compostable Floral Foam?
A Swedish Florist Teams Up with Our Lab to Make It Happen.
Every year, more than 15,000 tonnes of plastic-based floral foam are sold in Europe. Used in flower arrangements for weddings, funerals and events, it’s a hidden source of microplastics, lingering in soil and incinerators for decades after the flowers are gone.
Frida Persson, cultivator, florist and founder of Fridas Blomster, is now co-developing a compostable alternative to floral foam in our R&D lab at The Loop Factory.
This innovation is part of the EU-funded project SpeedUpArena Halland, designed to give startups and small businesses access to prototyping labs, material expertise and circular innovation support.
From plastic problem to circular solution.
The goal is a biodegradable floral base that florists and cemeteries can throw straight into the compost, turning waste into soil instead of microplastics.
Frida is now exploring natural materials and low-impact processes in our prototyping lab in Varberg, Sweden, supported by Halland Material Academy, a regional initiative accelerating the shift to circular materials and business models.
Innovation space for the next generation of materials.
For us, this is more than a one-off case.
